With the multiplicity of communication services (voice, SMS, MMS, Instant Messaging) and devices (mobile phone, PDA, PC), contact information is dispatched to multiple databases and terminals. Moreover, it often happens that being able to access a contact list would facilitate the use of some services, but there are unfortunately no connection between the service and the end-user's contact list. Typically, this is the case when an end user wants to send a SMS or a MMS from the operator's Web site: the phone numbers of his contacts are stored in his phone, but he can't access them from the Web interface.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5410 XDMS allows end-users to manage their contact information and group memberships in a unified list that is stored in the operator's network. Their contact list, with all the details, can then be accessed from any service (voice or data), whatever the access point, with whatever device the end-user uses. Access to this network address book is provided via Client Software.
