“ Improve adhesion reliability in production. Measuring surface energy confirms the substrate is ready for inks, varnishes or adhesives, helping reduce production defects. ”
Surface tension measurement (often also referred to as surface energy) is used to check whether a material is suitable for printing, painting, varnishing, bonding or assembly. In practical terms, it helps predict how a liquid will behave on the substrate: if the ink, varnish or adhesive spreads out, adhesion is likely to be good; if the liquid beads up, the risk of defects increases (peeling, pull-off, fragile markings, poor long-term durability). This measurement is therefore a diagnostic and quality-control tool used to validate a material, a surface treatment, and to secure production - including in-process production checks.
In this context, STTS develops surface treatment solutions designed to improve the adhesion of inks, varnishes, glues, adhesives, paints, foams, etc. Equipment and processes are adapted to application constraints: simple to complex parts, films, sheets, foams, thick supports (e.g., corrugated plastic boards), wires and cables, as well as conductive substrates.
STTS experts support customers in determining the surface energy level of substrates (the surface condition that enables - or prevents - good adhesion) using test liquids (dyne inks) or more comprehensive analyses with a goniometer (contact angle measurement). The goal is to characterize the initial condition, validate treatment effectiveness, and define a target level consistent with the application and industrial constraints.
Leveraging the know-how and experience of its teams, STTS works across many sectors: automotive, technical parts, medical, pharmaceutical, films, label printing, cosmetics, packaging, and aerospace.
